What’s It Like Inside the University of the Philippines?
Have you ever visited the University of the Philippines (UP)?
What do you imagine when you think about it?
A bustling campus filled with brilliant minds? A sprawling university surrounded by nature? Or perhaps a place where history, culture, and modernity blend seamlessly?
Last month, my friend invited me to accompany him to UP, and I was instantly smitten by the charm of this iconic university.
First of all, it’s massive! Walking around felt like exploring a small city, complete with nature parks, bike lanes, and open spaces perfect for relaxing or studying.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the Oblation, UP’s most iconic statue. It’s a bronze sculpture of a man with arms outstretched, symbolizing selfless service to the country.
Fun fact: did you know that the statue was modeled after Guillermo Tolentino’s assistant, with some adjustments based on a different person for the face? It’s not just a statue; it represents UP’s mission of offering knowledge and service to the Filipino people. And speaking of iconic traditions, have you heard about the Oblation Run? Every December, members of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity run around campus naked! Yes, you read that right. It’s both a bold statement and a tradition meant to raise awareness for social issues. Only in UP, right?
What makes UP even more special is its combination of modernity and Filipino culture. You’ll find unique restaurants, cafés, and local karinderyas (small eateries) scattered all over. Whether you’re craving a fancy meal or simple, home-cooked Filipino dishes, UP has something for everyone! The campus is also rich with cultural landmarks, art installations, and a vibrant atmosphere that makes you feel inspired to learn and grow.
No wonder it’s considered one of the top universities in the Philippines! Have you been to UP, or would you like to visit? Let’s talk about it in our English conversation class.
Share your thoughts, learn new vocabulary, and practice speaking in a fun and relaxed way. See you there!
